Children’s Learning Garden Programs
The Children’s Learning Garden Program began in 1998 as a joint project with Cambridge Camping Association’s Cambridge Adventure Day Camp. The program was set up to give inner-city youth the opportunity to learn about how food grows. In 2007, we were able to expand the number of children served by adding programs offered through the Waltham Parks and Recreation Department. Today, we are still continuing our partnerships with both Cambridge Adventure Day Camp and the Waltham Rec Department, and are also now offering some sessions ourselves that are open to the general public, allowing us to provide an opportunity for children from all over the Greater Boston Area to come out and enjoy our farm programs! Children’s Learning Garden programs enable hands-on learning about natural ecosystems, crop production and the farm environment, nutrition and food choices, and group cooperation. Children participate in a range of activities such as planting vegetables and cover crops, picking potato bugs off of plants, exploring the compost pile, making observations and keeping journals, playing games, and cooking up tasty farm recipes. We focus heavily on ensuring participants have the chance to make and try healthful, farm fresh snacks, as farm-to-table programming is a core part of our lesson plans.

Service Learning Opportunities
Since its founding in 1995, Waltham Fields Community Farm has been used as a resource by local groups and individuals seeking a rewarding and educational experience. These volunteers help out with the farm duties while also learning informally about how food is grown and the merits of community service.
Find out more about volunteering at WFCF on our Ways To Get Involved page!
Group volunteering opportunities are currently available for High School age and older. For elementary and middle school opportunities see above (Group Farm Visits).
