How CSA shares work

Payment for a CSA share is required up front for a portion of the harvest that will be grown and distributed in seasonal installments. All shares are picked up at the farm, giving shareholders a strong connection to the land, open space, and our farm staff. The CSA model provides our farm with income at the beginning of the growing season, when our expenses are highest, and provides us with a guaranteed customer base. This way, our farmers can focus their time and energy on growing food and stewarding the soil.

The Vegetables

All of WFCF’s crops are grown adhering to organic production methods.

Each week, our farmers will harvest 10-15 different crops; as a shareholder, you will choose 6-9 of these vegetables according to your tastes and household needs, pack them up in your own bags, and take them home. How much you are allowed to take of each crop is predetermined by our farmers. Some crops may be limited, and others abundant, depending on the week and weather.

Selections vary week to week and by season. Early summer brings shares rich in greens, scallions, and radishes; soon we move into carrots, cabbages, beets, and onions; and full summer arrives with cucumbers, summer squash, eggplant, peppers, bountiful tomatoes and more.  The season is rounded out in the fall with hearty roots, zesty greens, potatoes, and winter squashes.  We often partner with Riverland Farm and Buckle Farm, certified-organic family farms based in Massachusetts and Maine, in order to supplement our own vegetable offerings.

Some shares offer Pick-Your-Own herbs, cherry and plum tomatoes, chilies, peas and more. Shareholders may pick any day during daylight hours using our map and following set quantity limits.

Newsletters

Our weekly CSA newsletters keep shareholders updated on the progress of the crops and the ups and downs of the season. Besides in-person interactions at CSA distributions, the e-mailed CSA newsletter is the primary way that our farmers communicate with shareholders and keep them informed about our systems, techniques, and challenges. We ask all shareholders to read the newsletters each week and feel free to chat with our farm staff at distributions.

See our Frequently Asked Questions for more details about CSA logistics.

Our Charitable Work

There is no work requirement associated with our CSA program.  Each year, our nonprofit organization grows 20% of our harvests for food assistance in Waltham and Greater Boston. We provide hundreds of low-income community members hands-on educational opportunities in our Learning Garden. This charitable work depends on volunteer assistance from working in the fields, helping with office tasks, coordinating fundraisers, and serving on WFCF's Board of Directors. You can also organize a volunteer visit from your workplace, school, or community group to the farm.

More information on volunteering with us is available in the Get Involved section.

*As part of our Food Access Program, Half-Price CSA Shares are available for low-income households. To see if you qualify, please read the USDA SNAP eligibility guidelines here. If your household is eligible, we’d love to talk with you more about it. Please contact Ana, our CSA Manager

*All Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares require a minimum $35 Annual Membership per household which directly supports our Food Access, Outreach, and Education programs. Membership is valid for one year.

Our Commitment to Sustainable Farming

Since 1995, we have grown our vegetable crops at Waltham Fields Community Farm using organic practices. We use only materials approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute for pest control and fertility management. We manage our soil to grow nutritious, healthy, vigorous, delicious food without the use of synthetic chemicals. While we are not certified organic, our commitment to sustainability in and out of the fields is ongoing.

We encourage CSA shareholders to ask our farm staff about our farming practices, and we make it a habit to communicate those practices through our CSA newsletter. We invite all our shareholders to join us in the fields for a firsthand taste of sustainable farming practices.

Because we believe that fresh, local food should be available to all members of our community, we also partner with several local organizations to provide our vegetables to families and individuals experiencing food insecurity. You can support our hunger relief work by making a contribution.

Payment Information

  • We require each household with any CSA share to purchase an annual membership, which is tax-deductible and supports our nonprofit hunger relief and education programs. If splitting a share, the additional household must become a dues-paying member.  Our shares are intended for a single household, but if you decide to split the share, please keep it between two households to reduce administrative and logistical impacts on WFCF staff.

  •  Full payment is due upon registration. Please contact Ana@Communityfarms.org if WFCF can support an alternate payment plan with you.

  • All shares must be registered and paid through the online portal. Please email Ana@Communityfarms.org if you need assistance.

  • Please make sure the name of the primary shareholder is on all payments for your share.  The primary shareholder is the "owner" of the share in our bookkeeping records.  Making sure this name is on all payments and correspondence related to your share helps us to credit your account accurately and keeps our administrative costs down too. Primary shareholders will receive an emailed invoice from us in early April with a confirmation of all share purchases and payments.

  • Important refund information: January-March 31 - any refunds issued will have a $35 administrative fee deducted. April 1 and beyond - a refund is contingent upon our ability to sell your reserved share and a $35 administrative fee will be deducted. We cannot guarantee a refund after April 1, and refunds are given at the discretion of WFCF.  Please contact, ana@communityfarms.org to inquire about registration cancellation.

  • You will be assessed any bank fees in the event of returned or bounced checks.

  • Email is our primary means of communication with our shareholders.  Each week during the season, you will receive a CSA e-newsletter which includes a crop list for the week, seasonal recipes, and "Notes from the Field."  Please make sure that we have a working email address for you and any share partners and that you check any additional inbox pre-sort folders that your email server may utilize for messages from us, and that you are able to receive emails from: walthamfields@communityfarms.org, farmmanager@communityfarms.org, distributioncoordinator@communityfarms.org, admin@communityfarms.org, and invoices@communityfarms.org.
