WFCF CSA Share Renewals Begin October 1

On October 1, we'll email a CSA share renewal form to all primary CSA shareholders.  (The primary shareholder is the person whose name the share is listed under when you check in at the CSA distribution.)  The form will also be available at CSA distributions.

You'll have two options listed on the form: to renew your share for 2010 with a non-refundable $50 deposit, or to turn your share over to someone that you currently split the share with (if, for example, you are moving and your current share partner wants to take over the share).  Current shareholders will have until October 23rd to return the form to the farm with their $50 deposit.

If we don't receive a form from you by October 23rd, we will assume that you don't want to renew your share for 2011.

Beginning November 1, any remaining 2011 shares will be offered to our wait list.

Roast root vegetables

Sarah wrote in to say "Tried this tonight and it was delicious, it almost tasted like a dessert!"

6-8 carrots (med sized)
4 beets
 4-6 small turnips

Dice the vegetables place in a covered baking dish add olive oil and a bit of salt, pepper, and thyme and coat.

Roast at 425 for approximately 1 hour, or until vegetables are soft.  Remove from oven and drizzle with a balsamic reduction (I used about 75% reduction) and sprinkle with goat cheese.

Return to 350 oven for about 5 min or until goat cheese is warm and slightly melted, serve.

Looking for Scarecrow-Making Supplies

Our Waltham Farm Day art project this year will be making scarecrows to put in the farm fields to keep away the geese this winter.  If you have any of the following materials lying around at home and want to donate them to WFCF, please bring them to distribution this week and leave them in the Scarecrow Supply Box at the check-in table.

Supplies needed: string, wire, buttons, sequins, tempura paint, plastic grocery bags, hay or straw, glue, aluminum pie plates, other shiny things.

Notes from the Field

Fall is here! September 22 marks the official passing into this wonderful season, although it has felt like it for a couple of weeks  now. Field prep, transplanting and weeding has largely come to an end for the year; the harvest season is truly upon us. Cooler weather crops are here to stay while our summer favorites will begin to fade away over the next week or two. From now on, we'll spend the majority of our time harvesting and preparing the farm for the coming winter.

Since June, we have
really enjoyed the cultivated rowshelp of our farm crew. They weeded, planted and harvested along with us through the hottest of days. But as we say goodbye to summer, sadly, we must say the same to these folks as well. Looking back, there was a lot of laughter in the fields this year. Stories, jokes or politics are just a few of the possible topics covered in a day. I suppose that's one of the things I love about farming--the social aspect. Contrary to the iconic image of a lone farmer out in his field, we work together everyday to grow food for the community. I feel very lucky to have worked with so many wonderful people this year and I send a big thank you to each of them for all of their hard work.
