Notes from the Field Generally speaking, September 15th is seen as the deadline by which farmers in the northeast plant their last crops in order to get any substantial growth for the fall. Both shorter days and cooler night temperatures affect growth, so we try and take advantage of these warmer days while they are still with us. The soil seems to be holding its moisture fairly well this time of year and the weed pressure is not quite what it was back in the height of the summer. The cool, dewy mornings and warm (not hot!), late summer days seem ideal for fall radishes, turnips and mustard greens.
Last week we spent several afternoons preparing the season's final beds for planting and turned in many remaining weeds and finished crops from earlier summer generations. We're taking advantage of this week's lovely weather by seeding and transplanting the last of our fall greens and sewing the winter's cover crops. The greens will be harvested in mid October but the cover crops will grow until hard frosts, short days and snow cover stop their growth for the season. The cover crops will however, survive the cold winter months and continue growing next spring.
It's hard to believe that we are talking about hard frosts and the short days of fall and winter but they will soon be with us...but not yet. In the mean time, enjoy the beautiful fall-like weather.
