Notes from the Field
Welcome to the 2010 season!

Wow, what a spring! March began with record warmth, followed by record setting rainfall and flooding across the region. We were happy for the dry weather that followed tomatoes under plasticbut three weeks without a drop of rain forced us to start irrigating in April. Damaging thirty mile an hour winds, forty degree temperature swings within twelve hour periods, and freezing nighttime temperatures have kept us on our toes throughout May! Since Memorial Day and the beginning of June we have seen spectacular thunderstorms, with tropical temperatures and humidity, the kind we expect in July.  Almost overnight, both crops and weeds responded to the water and soil warmth. The transition from cold to cool, cool to warm and warm to hot has been anything but linear.  Spring's funny that way; two steps forward, one step back.

So here we are entering the second week of June, harvesting that which was sown in March and April. This week we will begin seeding our fall crops in the greenhouse fieldsfor September and October's harvests. Broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprout seedlings will fill up the space recently created by moving our beloved summer crops like cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes out into the fields. It almost seems out of place to be thinking about late summer and fall during our first week of the CSA!

Erinn, Dan, Amy and I have enjoyed the spring thus far. We look forward to seeing you around the farm over the coming weeks as we begin another season's harvest...
