Compost at the Farm
You know the drill: carry your scraps out to the pile at the back of the farm.  Please bury your scraps and/or cover them with leaves from the nearby leaf pile. No meat scraps, no whole bread loaves. Thanks for contributing to the compost pile!

Escarole
Thanks to Radical Roots Farm, whose description of one of our favorite underappreciated vegetables is a real winner.  To learn more about escarole and how to use it, check out the Radical Roots escarole page.  You'll be glad you did!

Pumpkin Fettucine Alfredo
Thanks to shareholder Rebecca Leong for bringing this simple and delicious recipe to our attention.  You can substitute any cooked squash for the pumpkin in this recipe!

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon herbs de provence
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 ounces fettuccine, cooked
  • freshly grated parmesan, to garnish
  • fresh sage, julienne, to garnish

  1. Heat oil and butter in a sauce pan with minced garlic and cook until lightly golden and fragrant.
  2. Whisk in cream, pumpkin and spices and let simmer until thoroughly heated and smooth.
  3. Toss with cooked pasta, garnish with parmesan and sage.

Welcome to the WFCF Winter Share!

If you are receiving this e-newsletter, you have signed up and paid for a winter CSA share from Waltham Fields Community Farm.  We are excited to share the bounty of our 'second season' with you this year.

Winter Share pickups at the farm are:
  • Saturday, November 3rd from 12-4 PM (this time is a little different from the others to coincide with the end of the Chestnut Farms meat share pickup)
  • Saturday, November 17th from 1-4 PM
  • Saturday, December 1st from 1-4 PM
  • Saturday, December 15th from 1-4 PM

During pickup hours, families picking up their winter share should come to the CSA barn to gather your vegetables.  Bring bags to carry your bounty away!  One note:  winter share root crops are unwashed so they'll keep better, so make sure you bring bags you don't mind getting dirty. Bring cash or your checkbook too -- we'll have additional products for sale!

If you can't make one or more of the winter share pickups, email Amanda.  We'll pack your share up and put it outside the barn for you to pick up.  No one will be at the farm Sunday or Monday, so please let us know in advance if you want your share packed up.  Any shares remaining without advance notice will be donated.

Notes from the Field

We picked the last vegetables for the summer share on Friday at around 4 o'clock and spent the last hour of the day planting and breaking up garlic.  Garlic, as everyone knows, needs to be planted during the World Series.  Since this year's Series was threatening to be brief (not to mention the giant storm bearing down on the region), we were in a hurry to get this final crop in the ground.  This year, all the garlic we planted was saved from our own beautiful Spanish Roja crop, some of which you'll see in the winter share as well.  We don't do much seed saving on the farm (primarily because it's a whole other set of skills that we haven't mastered yet), but there's something incredibly satisfying about putting our own seed garlic in the ground, safely tucked in the soil before the deluge to come.

Saturday morning, Dan finished planting the garlic with his incredible group of volunteers, and went to work harvesting some of the vulnerable crops before the storm.  Sunday morning we did a final harvest of spinach, took the cover off the hoophouse in the middle of the field, buttoned up the doors of the coolers, the barn, and the gray shed, and waited for the rain and wind.  Monday morning the weather wasn't too bad, so Sutton and I met at the farm and harvested some more; as the weather turned gusty, we headed home.

We'll see what the storm brought when we get back to the farm tomorrow morning.  By Saturday, when the weather turns sunny and cooler, all this wild wind and rain will hopefully be nothing more than a distant memory.  There is lots of harvesting to be done between then and now, and a big milestone looms in the year:  Zannah and Sutton's last official day for this season.  This is a sad day for all of us, made slightly better by the fact that both of them will help us out with the winter share harvest part-time this fall, and that both of them will return for a second season with WFCF in 2013.  We could not ask for a better, more satisfying end-of-season gift than to spend the next few months looking forward to working with the two of them.

Hope you all ride out the storm safe and sound, and that it brings you nothing worse than a couple of hours of candlelight.  See you all on Saturday.

Enjoy the harvest,

Amanda, for the farm staff
